Teach each pad the sound of an object on your desk, then play the desk. Gray means untrained. Tap a pad, hit your object three times, and it turns green.

Tap a gray pad to teach it. Hit the same object in the same spot three times — soft, then medium, then hard, so it learns your whole range. Tap a green pad to re-teach it — the old sound keeps working until the new one succeeds. When the border of the whole kit flashes, it heard a hit but didn't recognise it.
